Atlantic Southeast Airlines usually finishes way down in the rankings for on-time arrivals.

But let’s give credit where credit is due and reward the airlines that showed the most improvement.

ASA, a regional carrier owned by SkyWest, did the best job of improving its on-time performance in 2010 among all 18 U.S. carriers ranked by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Last year, 79.2 percent of Atlantic Southeast’s flights arrived on time, up eight percentage points from 2009. The 79.2 percent puts it 11th among the carriers, but first in year-over-year improvement.

Next is AirTran Airways, which improved its 2010 performance by 7 percentage points. Alaska Airlines, Mesa Air, United Airlines and Comair all improved their performance by more than 4 points.

And then we have the bottom of the class.

Pinnacle Airlines saw its on-time performance slip by 4 points. Southwest Airlines had the worst record of the major carriers, down 3.5 points. SkyWest, ASA’s parent, was off 3 points.
