U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane today approved American Airlines’ merger with US Airways, but he did not approve a $20 million severance package for American’s CEO.

The U.S. Trustee in the case had objected to the payment, questioning whether it complied with federal bankruptcy law.

Lane did not question the amount of Horton’s severance, but he agreed that its timing appeared to violate part of the bankruptcy law.
