There’s a scene in the 1982 movie “Poltergeist” in which the teenage daughter returns home to discover a lot of weird things happening, and screams, “What’s happening?!”

We wonder the same thing as we read the goings-on at the Southwest Airlines flight attendants’ union, Transport Workers Union Local 556.

The most recent events were, if I got it right:

– The union’s executive board suspended the vice president and treasurer after a member filed charges against them.

– A trial was scheduled for last Monday and Tuesday.

– The executive board tried to delay the trial at the last minute.

– President Stacy Martin ruled that the trial would go on.

– After the trial, the trial board on Tuesday found the two not guilty of the charges, lifting their suspensions.

– The executive board on Tuesday suspended Martin because he refused to delay the trial.

– With Martin suspended, the vice president, Chris Click, became the acting president.

– Click’s first act as acting president was to reinstate Martin as president.

Oh, but it becomes even more interesting from there.

According to a message Sunday from Martin to members, an executive board member, negotiating committee member and two other unidentified persons “broke into the President’s office and removed several documents. They further altered the Union Office by drilling out the current locks and replacing them with their own.”

According to a timeline provided members Sunday on Facebook, Martin “had the locks rekeyed immediately and the keycards revoked of those seen on camera performing these illegal actions.”

A Chicago-based flight attendant allegedly tried to enter the union offices Sunday using the new keys (that Martin had changed) and the keycard of the negotiator, then fled when he realized people were in the union offices, the timeline stated.

So that’s the Facebook version, which Martin controls.

What does the executive board have to say about all this? Here’s the board’s message on the local’s website Sunday:

“On behalf of the TWU Local 556 Executive Board, we are writing to you to express our most humble and sincere apologies for the events that have occurred yesterday and today. As reported, per Article XXI of the TWU Constitution, President Stacy Martin and 1st Vice President Chris Click were suspended from their Offices by the Executive Board last week. These two suspended Officers are behind the illegal and unauthorized use of Union assets and the unauthorized use of Union Communication mediums by which incorrect information was sent to our Members and vendors. This is a very sad time for the Members of Local 556 and the Flight Attendants of Southwest Airlines. Please know that all the other Members of your Local 556 Executive Board are hard at work and doing everything possible to right these wrongs and will hold accountable all parties responsible.

“In Unity,

“Your TWU Local 556 Executive Board”

AMR and US Airways have just filed documents Thursday saying that they intend to issue 100 million more shares of “capital stock and preferred stock” than originally planned.

With the change, approved between the two carriers on Wednesday, the merged company will have authorization for 1.75 billion shares of common stock and 200 million shares of preferred stock.

The original proposal called for 1.75 billion shares of common stock and 100 million shares of preferred stock.

This was a simple advertisement, not an objective article. Obviously, there is not enough room in the overhead bins for two reasons. AA charges for checked bags. Aircraft were not designed for 1 bag per passenger overhead storage. If AA allowed 1 free checked bag, there would … [visit site to read more]

The two unions that represent a majority of the ground employees at American Airlines and US Airways announced Tuesday that they’ve agreed to work together as those employees’ bargaining representative after the two carriers merge.

The news from the Transport Workers Union and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers come as they face a representation battle from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

Flying Club Scholarship Receives 126 Applications

scholarship_graphic.jpgSeveral months ago I joined forces with three other Chicago based pilots to form Ground Effect Advisors and to offer the first ever scholarship to help create a flying club. We realized that there is a need across the country for new flying clubs to be created to foster more flying and to help keep the costs of flying down. However, starting a club is not easy.

So we developed some strong partnerships and created a scholarship that will provide over $3,500 in goods and services to the winner in effort to assist them in getting their club off the ground. Honestly, we did not know what to expect. We were blown away to receive 126 quality applications for the scholarship.

We have spent the last 14 days reviewing the applications and talking with many of the candidates as we try to identify 10 finalists, which will be announced on Wednesday, May 15. We will then select a winner by June 1, 2013.

There were some interesting data points that came out of the application data we received so we build an infographic that shares that information. You can access it through the image to the right or on the StartAFlyingClub.com website.

Stay tuned for further updates!

American Airlines launched its first Korean flights Thursday with a daily round trip to Seoul, South Korea.

Unless mistaken, we believe this is American’s first-ever service to South Korea rather than a return to a country previously served.

Tailoring its service to the market, American said it will offer Korean cuisine and entertainment on its Seoul flights.

“South Korea’s continued growth as a key business market has created increased demand for direct travel to and from the … [visit site to read more]

American Airlines and three subsidiaries have agreed to pay $24.9 million to the Federal Aviation Administration to settle more than $162 million in claims that the agency had lodged against the airline company.

The settlement, filed late Thursday afternoon in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York City, must be approved by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane.

“We are pleased to have reached a settlement with the FAA concerning its proof of claim filed as part of our restructuring process,” … [visit site to read more]
